The independent presidential candidate and prominent anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. selected Nicole Shanahan, a wealthy Silicon Valley attorney, as his running mate. Shanahan has previously donated $4 million to Kennedy's Super PAC and helped fund a 30-second Super Bowl ad campaign advertisement during the year.
Shanahan, who was previously married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, has contributed significantly to Democratic candidates in the past. During the campaign announcement speech, Kennedy described his running mate as "exactly the right person," someone who shares his passion for healthy organic food, sustainable agriculture, and clean lands. He called her a "cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologist" using "neural networks" to identify government abuse. He also praised her use of "advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to calculate the catastrophic health consequences of toxins in our soil, air, water, and food."
In her continued speech, Shanahan referred to Kennedy as "the only candidate against war today."
Kennedy, married to Your Enthusiasm actress Cheryl Hines, has previously promoted misinformation about vaccines, and the Center for Countering Digital Hate cited him as a leading spreader of COVID misinformation. In 2021, he was banned from Instagram for repeated sharing of false information. The ban was lifted in 2023.
