Like many of the Oscar-nominated movies, this year's Oscar ceremony lasted much longer than most viewers probably considered reasonable. But as long as the ceremony was, it was marked by enough surprises to make it a wild ride.
While host Jimmy Kimmel managed to score some good points with most of the filmmakers nominated for an Oscar, few of the stars seemed so poised on stage as they delivered acceptance speeches about how tough the competition this year has been. Da'Vine Joy Randolph opened the night winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie The Holdovers – which won a total of five awards. And while Aiyo Miyazaki wasn't there to receive his, The Boy and the Giant took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Out of the five awards of the director Justin Trier's Anatomy of a Fall, was ready, in the end, to take home the award for Best Original Screenplay, while the writer/director Cord Jefferson's American Literature won for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Following a surprising strip tease by John Cena as he announced Dangerous Things winning Best Costume Design, The Interest Area by writer/director Jonathan Glazer – who won the Best International Film award – gave a poignant and powerful speech about the line between his film and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. And while Robert Downey Jr.'s Best Supporting Actor win for Offenhaumer had its performances a little unexpected, they were not as stunned as the Godzilla Minus One creative team who brought Godzilla action figures on stage to receive awards for Best Visual Effects.
As the night went on, it became more and more clear that the Academy really fell in love with Dangerous Things as it won for makeup and hairstyling, production design, and Best Actress – the second Oscar for Emma Stone, who competed against Moonflower Killers of Lily Gladstone. And in a very unsurprising turn of events, Offenhaumer emerged on top at the end as it also won in the cinematography, original score, Best Actor, and Best Director categories.
