Tesla will unveil its Robotaxi on August 8, as Elon Musk announced hours after Reuters reported that the carmaker is canceling its plans to produce a low-cost electric vehicle. Reuters also stated that Musk's directive was "to go all in" on a robotaxis built on the company's small car platform. Tesla promises a cheaper electric vehicle with prices expected to start at $25,000 in a few years, and Musk already stated in January that he is optimistic the model will arrive in the second half of 2025. In response to the report, Tesla's CEO tweeted on Twitter that "Reuters lies (again)."
He did not clarify which part of the report was a lie, but considering he confirmed that Tesla is unveiling a Robotaxi, he likely meant the news organization's claim that the company is pulling the plug on an affordable EV. Currently, Tesla's cheapest car is the Model 3, but its prices start at $39,000. It will be interesting to see how the company will make the Robotaxi work with its camera system only – it has removed the steering wheel and other sensors that other robotaxi companies like Waymo heavily rely on, technologies that assist the driver before several years.
