Microsoft acquired Google DeepMind co-founder and partner Mustafa Suleyman. In a post on X, Suleyman announced that he is joining Microsoft as the new team CEO responsible for the company's consumer-facing AI products, including Copilot, Bing, and Edge.

Suleyman will also serve as a senior vice president at Microsoft AI and join the company's top leadership team reporting directly to CEO Satya Nadella. In addition to hiring Suleyman, Microsoft is also bringing on several employees from Inflection AI, including co-founder Karén Simonyan, who will serve as the chief scientist of the consumer AI group. Kevin Scott will remain Microsoft's chief technology officer and senior vice president of AI.

Suleyman founded DeepMind in 2010, which Google later acquired in 2014. He later served as Google's vice president of product management and AI policy before leaving the company in 2022 to found the startup Inflection AI.

"I have known Mustafa for several years and have greatly admired him as the founder of DeepMind and Inflection, and as a visionary, product creator, and team builder pushing the boundaries after bold missions," said Nadella in a statement released by Microsoft. "We have a real opportunity to build technology that was once considered impossible and meet our mission to ensure the benefits of AI reach every person and organization on the face of the earth, confidently and responsibly."

Microsoft has poured billions into its partnerships with OpenAI and recently struck a deal with the AI startup Mistral. The formation of a new AI team does not mean that Microsoft has forgotten about these partnerships. Microsoft says it "will continue to build an artificial intelligence infrastructure that includes personalized systems and silicon work to support OpenAI's model base roadmap," as well as "will build products on top of their base models."
