Around 600 employees in the quality assurance division of Activision have formed a union. With the assistance of American communication workers, the employees completed their vote with the results approved on Friday, March 8th. With this, Activision Quality Assurance United – CWA becomes the latest union formed from Microsoft's gaming division and the largest video game union in the United States.
In an interview with The Border magazine, Tom Shelly, a technical requirements specialist and one of the organizers of Activision Quality Assurance United, stated that the neutrality agreement and Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard last year made their goals easier to achieve.
"It was a waking effort that arose in recent weeks in response to the opportunities we had to organize freely following the merger," stated Shelly. "As QA employees, we often have the lowest protections and lowest wages among industry workers – despite our work being an integral part of the success of the companies we work for and the titles we produce."
In quality assurance, employees test games for bugs and other issues, and report them to other developers for correction. Since most QA positions are typically entry-level, the industry has a turnover of positions in these roles, emphasizing the need to protect employees.
Shelly praised Microsoft for recognizing the union voluntarily and hopes that it will inspire further organization within and outside the company.
