Apple has revamped its conversations with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to implement several AI features coming to iOS 18, according to a new report in Bloomberg. Apple is also building its own large language models to power some features of iOS 18, but its discussions with OpenAI focus on the "Chatbot/Search component." According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.
Reports indicate that Apple is also in talks with Google to license Gemini, Google's AI-powered Chatbot, for iOS 18. Bloomberg reports that these talks are still ongoing, and things could go either way as Apple has not made a final decision on which company's technology to use. It is possible, Gurman says, that Apple may eventually license AI technology from both companies or from either one.
So far, Apple has been particularly quiet about its artificial intelligence efforts, even as the rest of Silicon Valley plunged into an artificial intelligence arms race. But it has enough hints to suggest that it is cooking up something. When the company announced its profits in February, CEO Tim Cook said that Apple continues to work and invest in artificial intelligence and is "excited to share the details of our ongoing work in this area later this year." He claimed that the new M3 MacBook Air it launched last month was "the best consumer notebook in the world for AI," and according to reports, it will start releasing AI-focused laptops and desktop computers later this year. And earlier this week, Apple also released a bunch of large language models in open source code designed to operate locally on devices rather than in the cloud.
It is still unclear how Apple's artificial intelligence features will look on the iPhone and other devices. Generative AI is still known to be unreliable and prone to generating answers. Recent AI-powered gadgets like Humane Ai Pin have been released to disastrous reviews, while others like Rabbit R1 have yet to prove their value.
More will be revealed at WWDC on June 10th.
