Spaces, the live audio feature of X, now allows hosts to enable their video during chat sessions. The platform formerly known as Twitter announced the news on Wednesday with owner/CTO Elon Musk retweeting a guide from a user named "DogDesigner."
Spaces users will notice a new feature to "Allow Video" when creating a new Space session. Hosts can choose between the front or back camera of their phone, as well as landscape or portrait view of their video feed.
Video spaces are available in the iOS version of the X app, but we have not seen them available on Android or on the web yet. Many users have reported significant lag when trying out the feature so far.
Currently, only hosts have the ability to enable video. The end result is a prominent display of the host's video update, surrounded by icons of co-hosts, speakers, and listeners. At first glance, it's an environment similar to Twitch – expect the fact that all selected audience members can chime in at any moment. Also, the video feed of the host is only live within the Spaces session, so users will need to join the session to view.
When Elon Musk announced that Spaces would receive video at the end of last year, his description of it sounded closer to a video conferencing app or video call app like FaceTime, where the video feed shifts to whoever is currently speaking.
However, for now, a typical Spaces session with video boldly showcases the host's video feed, surrounded by smaller icons of each speaker, co-hosts, or other listeners in the room. It's not exactly like Twitch since anyone you give permission to can talk back to you, but it does make the host the central event in a similar way.
The new video integration of X Spaces is separate from the existing platform Live Broadcast feature, which allows users to stream video live. Spaces functions as a live chat room where multiple users can listen in and talk. In contrast, the typical audience in a Live Broadcast can only react or send hearts.
