The Super Mario Brothers movie was a massive hit for Nintendo, grossing over a billion dollars at the box office, making the decision to produce a sequel an easy one. In a new video, Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Chris Meledandri of Illumination Entertainment shared that the next movie is in development with a release date set for April 3, 2026.
Meledandri says that Illumination Paris studios, who worked on the first film, are elevating the movie's storyboard under the guidance of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic once again. He added that animation will begin shortly. After the movie's release on April 3 in the US "and in many other markets around the world," it will reach "selected territories" throughout the rest of the month.
Miyamoto says that the movie will have a "brilliant and enjoyable story" that expands on the world established in the first film.
With the announcement in November of the live-action Zelda Legend movie, we now have not just one, but two approved movies in development based on key intellectual properties of Nintendo. There isn't much information about the company's theatrical plans for Link. Wes Ball, director of The Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Monkey King, will lead the film, with Avi Arad and Miyamoto producing.
