After creating more than two million units of her latest virtual reality headphones, Bloomberg reports that Sony is stopping production to try to change unsold inventory. The PlayStation VR2 was launched last February for $549 as an accessory to the PlayStation 5, but IDC data indicates that shipments have declined every quarter since.
In addition to the halt in headphone production, Sony's recent layoffs have affected teams working on VR titles. It shut down London Studio, the developer behind Horizon Forbidden West, and Firesprite Studio was also impacted. Overall, the layoffs are expected to affect about 900 Sony employees, or 8% of its total workforce.
In an effort to expand the available content for its headphones, Sony recently announced that it is exploring PC support, offering "the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on the computer." It is currently unclear how widespread the headphone support for computer titles is likely to be, but support is planned for later this year.
